Domaine Berthier Coteaux du Giennois Blanc 'Polar Bear' 2019 75cl

£14.50

Tasting Note

Pale gold coloured, this white Coteaux du Giennois has typical aromas of white flowers, citrus and exotic fruits (grapefruit, passion fruit). Coteaux du Giennois white is a fresh and fruity wine with floral aromas, and notes of white fruits such as quince and pear. The wine is gentle and supple on entry to the palate and is followed by a refreshing acidity which provides good balance to the overall softness of the wine.

Producer

The Giennois appellation came into being in 1998 and is effectively a northern extension of the vineyards of Pouilly- sur-Loire. As with all the other satellite appellations, most of the new generation of growers here are also cereal farmers, although there has been a fair influx of producers arriving from Sancerre and Pouilly, confident that they can increase their production in other neighbouring appellations. The additional attraction for those on the right-bank is that the Giennois allows the production of both red and rosé wines too. The four-hectare vineyard of Domaine de L’Oselier is in Beaulieu-sur-Loire. Until 2014, they were worked by George Coudrat who, with no succession, retired with the vines passing to the Berthier family who also make wine in Sancerre. Everything is planted on the band of silex which runs through the appellation. Some of the Sauvignon vines are over 100 years old and are bush vines which means that they need to be hand-harvested.
