Tasting Note

A modern German Riesling, lots of apricots and peach with a nice flinty note throughout. Rapier like acidity gives wonderful balance.

Producer

Villa Huesgen is situated in one of the world's great Riesling vineyards, the Mosel, descending to the River Mosel. The beautiful Art-Nouveau family home is in Traben-Trarbach and was designed by Bruno Mohring in the early 20th century. The vineyard has 65 hectares of land planted entirely with Riesling which contain vines that are up to 70 years old. The harvesting here is done entirely by hand with a green harvest in the early summer and since August 2019, the winery has been certified by the Fair'N Green seal for sustainable viticulture, as they take responsibility for nature and people in the production of their wines.

The winemaking of the Huesgen family can be traced back to 1735, with the current owner of Villa Huesgen, Adolph, being the 8th generation of the family to be running the vineyards. He intends to continue bringing the winery up to date with a fully hands-on role in winemaking, simple and elegant presentation, a conversion to screwcaps for all of their wines, and a programme of ambitious vineyard acquisition and planting.

Whilst embodying tradition, regionality and an uncomplicated lifestyle in the family winery, Adolph brings a fresh and international perspective after having spent 10 years working for Robert Mondavi as well as stints at Yalumba, Tyrells and Domaine Bertagna. His passion for wine is in his blood but the desire to create something unique is in his character. He has reshaped the winery with idealism and innovation, with the wines characterising the enthusiasm and passion for expressive Riesling wines that is shared by the entire team at Villa Huesgen.
